With more than 1200 homes built to-date, there’s no doubt that Penny Homes is one of Taupō’s most successful businesses. It’s a homegrown story we can be proud of, as the company says cheers for 20 years – and looks towards the next 20.

In 1998 Kellie and John Penny decided that a rental property or two would be a good investment for their future. So they bought a large, scrub-covered section on the ‘other side’ of the river, and proceeded to build two good-quality houses which they intended to let out. Instead, the homes caught the eye of a local real estate agent who quickly sold them – prompting the couple to buy more land in the same area. Just six years later, Penny Developments (as they were known then) had built 280 homes, with another thousand sets of house keys handed over in the time since.

Prestigious Awards

There’s no doubt that the quality of the design and construction is what has helped make Penny Homes a household name in Taupō. And their homes certainly haven’t escaped the eye of New Zealand’s most reputable building awards – the Registered Master Builders House of the Year competition. The company has taken out two National Category Winner awards – in 2009 and 2017 – as well as multiple regional awards, proving that they truly know what it takes to build a home to be admired.

A part of the past, present and future

Very much a part of Taupō over the past two decades, Penny Homes has made its mark on the town’s landscape. From building a new ‘home’ for the Lake Taupō Coastguard in 2005, to constructing all of the residential properties in the Brentwood development, the business is also making itself well-known in the big cities of Wellington and Auckland. And the company is extremely proud to be one of the first providers of new homes which come under the Government’s KiwiBuild affordable housing programme – giving families currently locked out of the Auckland housing market an opportunity to purchase their own home.

Kellie and John are still involved in the day-to-day running of operations, with significant plans to continue growing the success of Penny Homes and become New Zealand’s number one home build company.

To mark the occasion of such a significant milestone, Penny Homes has also undergone a refresh of its visual identity. With the aim to better represent the company’s high standard of quality and who they are today, a new website and brand update has kickstarted the next twenty year chapter.
